» Congratulations to the 2006 Double Springs Middle School Math Team for the third place win at the Northwest Alabama District of Mathcounts competition held February 25th at UNA. Team members include: Nick Bell, Jordan Courington, Leah Mayhall, Jessica Bloom, Robert Bryant, Harris McKinney, Megan Posey, and Lucas Posey.
» Congratulations to the Lynn High School Weightlifting team for their 1A State Championship. The team also placed 2nd in the State 1A - 4A division.
» Friday, January 27th the DECA Chapter carried 47 students to Drake Technical College in Huntsville to compete in the Regional Competitions. There are 29 winners who will advance to the State competition in Birmingham March 17 & 18.
» Congratulations to Lance Mailloux of Meek High School for being accepted to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Nursing Scholars Program. Ten incoming freshman are accepted to this prestigious program each year and are guaranteed acceptance to the UAB School of Nursing. Lance has also been awarded a four year Green and Gold scholarship to UAB worth $14,000.
» Congratulations to Josh Tolbert of Meek High School for being selected as a semi-finalist in the Coca-Cola Scholars Program. Coca-Cola Scholarships are awarded based on character, personal merit and commitment. Merit is demonstrated through leadership in school, civic and extracurricular activities, academic achievement, and motivation to serve and succeed.
» Congratulations to Addison High School Senior Caleb Parker for being selected as the Wendy's High School Heisman State Winner for Alabama.
Nominees are judged equally in three area: academics, community service and athletics. ACT, Inc. reviews all materials and scores the nominees based on the program criteria.
» Congratulations to Lynn High School Seniors Ashley Lawson and Cory Baughn on their ACT high scores. Ashely scored 32 and Cory scored 31.
Also to Lynn High Football's Jr. Dustin Cagle who holds the state of Alabama record for most passing yards in a single game (548).
» According to an October 18, 2005 press release by the Alabama State Department of Education, Meek High School is one of one hundred thirteen schools to be included on the AYP Honor Roll. The schools included on this prestigious list were schools that met or exceeded Adequate Yearly Progress for two years in a row in the state of Alabama.
» Congratulations to Danny Stallings for being elected to the Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools (CLAS) 2005-2006 Board of Directors. Mr. Stallings is serving on the Alabama Association of Secondary School Principals.

» Congratulations to Cory Baughn, senior at Lynn High School, for receiving a University Scholars Award Scholarship to The University of Alabama at Birmingham. This scholarship covers full tuition and books for four years. Cory has also been offered a scholarship to The University of Alabama.
Update! Cory has been accepted into the UAB HONOR'S PROGRAM. This is in addition to the University Scholar's Award valued at $22,500.00. There were 250 applicants for only 50 openings in the fall of 2006. These are exceptional honors. Cory's parents are Richard and Lisa Baughn of Lynn.
» Congratulations to the Winston County High School chapter of the National Beta Club. The club attended the annual convention in Birmingham on February 2-3, 2006.The scrapbook team (consisting of Kayla Anthony, Haley Batchelor, Tara Breed, Tiffany Cole, Holli Jacobs, Ashley Millwood, Laci Tomlinson, Bethany Wright, and artwork by John Bailey) won first place. Marcus Posey earned first place in oratory, and Megan Forsyth received a first place award for on-site creative writing. In the math competition, Lee Batchelor earned a second place finish, and Sara Benson placed second in the on-site pen & pencil drawing competition. Kayla Anthony also placed third in the on-site scratch art competition. All of these participants received an automatic invitation to compete at the national convention in Greensboro, NC, June 28-July 1, 2006. Also, John Bailey was one of eight finalists in the special talent competition for the third consecutive year.
» Lynn Elementary Teacher Retires at Christmas Mrs. Gwen Nelson celebrated her retirement from Lynn Elementary School with 25 years of service. She was teaching Kindergarten at the time of her retirement. The faculty and staff of Lynn Schools surprised Mrs. Nelson with a party along with a new rocking chair and plenty of springtime gardening supplies to send her into a blissful retirement. Mrs. Nelson taught many students over the years, and her impact was always loving and memorable. Mrs. Nelson is married to Dan, and they have two children, Matt and Mindy.
» Congratulations to Chase C. and Phalicia M. for winning the Parisian Operation Career essay contest! The contest was sponsored by Parisian, Portico magazine, and the Birmingham News. Chase and Phalicia are two of 24 students chosen statewide to participate in the program which involves shadowing a mentor in each student's desired career field. Phalicia will be shadowing the 2004-2005 Alabama Teacher of the Year, Cynda Fickert, and Chase will be shadowing Robert Ingram, a professional pilot. Chase and Phalicia will meet their mentors at a luncheon at the Parisian corporate offices on Wednesday, December 7th. They and their mentors will set a date for their mentoring experience, and the students will write follow-up essays for publication in Portico magazine. Additionally, Chase and Phalicia each won a $1,000 scholarship to the college of their choice. Chase is a senior and Phalicia is a junior at Meek High School. Again, congratulations Chase and Phalicia!
» Congratulations to Terry Youngblood at Meek High School for receiving a $1,000 grant from Channel 42 news! Mr. Youngblood will be able to use the money for classroom supplies.

» Meek High School's Students of the Month for August are Bradly M and Holly A. They received a plaque in honor of their achievement. Shown with Bradly and Holly are Danny Stallings, Meek High School principal, and Alan Owens, vice president of Traders and Farmers Bank at Arley. Traders and Farmers Bank at Arley sponsored the plaques. Congratulations Bradly and Holly!

» Congratulations to Sr. Ashley Lawson of Lynn High School for receiving a 4 year scholarship to Auburn University value of 29,000.00 for tuition, books and fees.
Ashley also received a University Scholars Award for fall 2006-2007 academic year to UAB. The scholarship is estimated at a value of $18,500.00 plus an additional books and fees award at a value of $4,000.00. Ashley is planning on a career in pharmacy.
Ashley has also received a Presidential Scholarship from The University of Alabama, a full-tuition academic award. This is an exceptional honor.
Ashley is the daughter of Rodney and Connie Lawson of Lynn.
» Congratulations to Chelaine McCarty of Addison High School. Chelaine was named to the All-American Volleyball Team. She was one of only two girls in the state of Alabama to earn this honor.
» Congratulations to Addison High School's Caleb Parker for being named the Bryant-Jordan Scholar Athlete for the state class 1A. This scholarship is based on scholastic achievement, athletic achievement and community service.

» Ashley Harden, an alumnus of Meek High School and student at UNA recently received her scores on the PRAXIS, a required test for all who wish to enter the field of education. Ashley rated the highest score in Alabama. She graduated in December 2005, ready to put all her knowledge to work for the children of Alabama.
Congratulations, Ashley! We are so proud to claim you as one of our own.
Update - Ashley received the Keller Key for having the highest grade point average of the 421 graduates at UNA's December graduation. The elementary education K-6 major had a 4.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
