2010 Winston County Science Fair - Addison Elementary held the Science Fair at the Addison Traders and Farmer's Bank on May 11th. This was the first year that all 4 county schools were able to participate. Each school brought their top 6 winners to compete. Congratulations to all that made it!!! Montgomery, Ala. - A total of 81 Alabama high school seniors have earned a prestigious national award, the High Schools That Work (HSTW) Award of Educational Achievement. This award is given to high school seniors who complete a challenging and focused program of study, and demonstrate readiness for employment and college studies. This year's award winners include these students from Winston County High School:
Amber Martin, Emily Hood, Jeremy Gates, Leah Mayhall, Jordan Courington, Robert Bryant
HSTW, a Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) initiative, is the largest high school improvement effort in the United States, with more than 1,300 school sites in 32 states.


Congratulations to Mrs. Beth Wilson Gilbreath's Double Springs Middle School Gifted Class for winning 1st place at the McWane Center Celebrate Science Exhibit competition! They completed against 17 other schools.


Congratulations to the Meek High Girls Track 4 x 800 team for winning State, with a time of 11:20.23. Team Members Hatti Vaughn, Hannah Denson, Alicia Barrett and Rebekah Wolfe.

Congratulations to Peyton Thompson, a 7th grade student at Addison High School, for outstanding achievement in Duke University TIPS Program. He received exceptional scores for a 7th grader on the SAT (College Entrance Exam). He has been invited to attend a recognition ceremony at the University of Alabama and will also be able to attend the Duke TIPS Summer Studies Program at various universities.

» Congratulations to the contestants of the 2010 Winston County Spelling Bee. The winner was Brooke from Meek and the runner-up was Logann from Lynn.

»  Congratulations to Kaitlin Snoddy, 7th grader at Double Springs Middle School, for winning the State Junior High Beef Cook-off. Kaitlin, her mother, and Mrs. Lovett traveled to Montgomery on January 16, where she competed against thirteen other contestants and won first place.

» Congratulations to Meek FACS/FCCLA student Danielle Gibson, a sophomore, for placing 3rd in the State Beef Cook-off in Montgomery, AL on Saturday Jan. 16th. She competed against 17 others in her division. Danielle received $110.00, a t-shirt, apron, and recipe book. Her advisor is MaLea Ergle.

»  Congratulations to Summer Stewart. Summer is a 7th grader at Meek High School, is a competitive gymnast at Jasper Elite. She competed in the Alabama State Judge’s Cup on Dec. 13th in Tuscaloosa. She won all-around in her division with a score of 37.1 and placed 1st on the uneven bars with a score of 9.350. Summer qualified for the Alabama National Team in which she will compete in the National Judge’s Cup on Jan. 9th 2010 in Covington, Kentucky. There were six girls from across the state to make this team. After this competition, she will compete as a level 8 gymnast. She will be competing in Alabama, Florida, and Louisiana this season. Summer’s parents are John and Kellie Stewart of Arley.

»  Congratulations to Meredith Daniel of DSMS. Meredith won the Alabama State Judge's Cup Invitational 12/13/09 in her age division in Tuscaloosa, AL. She had an All-Around score of 37.375. She also won the Uneven Bars with a score of 9.275, and the Beam with a score of 9.300. She is one of six girls from across the State out of 80 gymnasts that made the Alabama State Team, and will go to National Judge's Cup on January 8th and 9th in Cincinnati, Ohio to compete in the National Championships. Meredith is a Sixth-Grade, A-Honor Roll student at DSMS and also a member of the Junior Beta Club. Her parents are: Bobby Shane and Debbie Daniel. Meredith has competed in gymnastic competitions in Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida. She will compete in Louisiana and Ohio in 2010. We are very proud of this talented DSMS student!
