» Congratulations to Meek High School's 11th grade students, Katie Mauldin and Amber Peek for placing 4th in the National FCCLA STAR Events Competition, Focus on Children, Sr. this summer in Orlando, FL. Their teacher is FACS Teacher, MaLea Ergle.

» WCTC Cosmetology Teacher Cali Alexander was recognized as a 2008 Technical Education New Teacher of the Year Nominee.

The Winston County Technical Center Business/Marketing Program was recognized as one of the top ten programs in the state for the second year in a row. Teachers are: Latricia Faulkner, Bart Shannon, and Bethany Flanagan.

» Congratulations to the National BETA Club Champions - Tyler Cagle placed first for the Junior High Division in the Special Talent Category. He sang "If You're Reading This" by Tim McGraw and played the guitar. The WCHS Scrapbook Team placed first in the Senior Division. The team consists of Susie Baker, Candace Cole, Lacie Greene, Adam Flanagin, Holli Jacobs, Amber Martin, Brooke McCrary, and Marcus Posey.

» Danny Stallings is elected to the Retirement System of Alabama Board in the Principal Position. "I am very proud to be serving on the Teachers Retirement Systems Board representing not only the educators from the Winston County School System, but also educators from across the state" says Meek High School Principal, Danny Stallings.

» Congratulations to the Winston County High School Academic Bowl Team for their second consecutive win in the Second Annual Winston County Academic Bowl. For the past two years, Traders and Farmers Bank has sponsored a county-wide academic competition for students from grades seventh through twelfth for the past two years. Questions are compiled from teachers from other counties which give students the opportunity to compete in all academic areas of the curriculum. For the second year, Winston County High School has remained champion of the Winston County Academic Bowl Winners' Cup.

» Congratulations to the Addison Elementary Scholars Bowl team for the second place win in the County Tournament.


» Congratulations to the WCHS Key Club who attended the Key Club Convention in Mobile, Alabama March 28-30, 2008. Frances Gillentine received the Robert L. Bottsford outstanding faculty advisor award. Scrapbook placed first, Candace Cole placed first in Oratorical, Holli Jacobs placed 2nd in talent, Holli Jacobs and Ethan Lolley both received the Robert F. Lucas Lieutenant Governor’s Award, Ethan Lolley received the Yetta G. Samford Outstanding Lieutenant Governor Award, Ethan Lolley and Holli Jacobs both received a $1,000.00 scholarship.

Morgan Rose won a gold medal and gold overall in Illustrated Story (senior).
Mariah Martinez won a gold medal and gold overall in Illustrated Story (junior).
Anna Mauldin won a gold medal and gold overall in Reading Story (junior).
Andi Gibson won a silver medal in Job Interview (senior).
The Meek FCCLA received more points than any other FCCLA in the state.


» The following fourth grade students at Double Springs Elementary School have been selected to pursue school credit while building leadership skills during a People to People World Leadership Forum.

» Congratulations to Mrs. Dana Baker, the February 2008 Alfa Teacher of the Month. The program honors outstanding K-12 public and private school teachers and principals with $1,000 cash awards (not grant awards) and $1,000 to their schools.


» Senator Zeb Little presents Mrs. Sue Reed with a check from the Education Incentive Fund Grant Project. Winston County Schools received a $249,988.00 grant . Funding will be used to add Mobile Computer Labs to the high schools, as well as some other technology projects throughout the high schools.


» Congratulations to all who competed in the County Spelling Bee. Nathan R. of DSMS was the County Champion and Andrea T. of LES was Runner up.

» Congratulation to the Meek Band of Champions for Superior Ratings for Band, Drum Major, Colorguard, Percussion at the Southern Hospitality Marching Competition in Hartselle, Alabama. The band received Best in Class and the Challenge Cup. Also for Superior Ratings for Drum Major, ColorGuard, and Percussion at the Tennessee Marching Invitational in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Also for Superior Ratings for Band, Drum Major, ColorGuard and Percussion at the Phil Campbell Marching Competition. They also received Best in Class.

»Hoar Construction GMAC Bowl Writing Contest
Lynn Elementary's Logann S. placed in the top 10 out of approximately 9000 entries and traveled to Mobile in December to compete in the GMAC Bowl. Logan was runner-up in the December competition and received a $3000.00 savings bond. Logan is a 5th grader in Mrs. Boteler's class.
Alabama Gerontological Society Essay Contest
Joseph L. wrote an inspiring essay about his grandmother, Rina Nunelly. Joseph and his grandmother are featured in December of the 2008 Alabama Gerontological Society Calendar. Joseph is also a 5th grade student of Mrs. Boteler's class,


» Superintendent Sue Reed was very excited to receive her Christmas gift from the Central Office staff. The gift was a donation to the Winston County Department of Human Resources’ Christmas Children fund in Mrs. Reed’s honor.


» Congratulations to the Meek High Varsity Cheerleaders for winning the AHSAA State Cheer Competition!


»Terri Finley was named Educator of the Year for students with Disabilities on Wednesday, October 3, 2007. Terri is the Special Education Teacher for Lynn High School. Terri is a blessing to Lynn School as she touches her students lives with determination and guidance, structurally and spiritually. Terri conducts her students by being a positive example. Terri is involved in Lynn High School in the classroom and on the court. She also supports her students every Wednesday morning in Fellowship of Christian Students. Terri's husband is Mark Finley, named Teacher of the Year in 2006-07, who also teaches at Lynn High School. Molly Finley, Terri's oldest daughter is a 2007 Lynn Graduate attending Northwest Shoal Community College and Maggie Finley is a Junior at Lynn High School presently. Thank you Terri Finley for the guidance you give our children and by making a positive impact on those with disabilities.

» Representative Jody Letson presents a check for $15,000 to the Winston County Board of Education for improvements of the Addison school student parking lot. These improvements will include a culvert and landscaping of the area. "We are grateful to Representative Jody Letson for his continued efforts in helping us provide for the needs of the students of Winston County," said Superintendent Reed.

» The Winston County High School chapter of The National Beta Club competed at the National Convention in Nashville, TN, June 20-23, 2007. Sara B. competed in on-site still-life pencil drawing, and the members of the scrapbook team, (composed of Susie B., Tara B., Tiffany C., Holli J., Brook M., and Melanie W.), created a baseball-themed book called "An All-Star Team" which chronicled the life of the club and its members from convention 2006 to convention 2007. The club was elated to find that the scrapbook placed second in the nation! Congratulations to all of these W.C.H.S. students! Dana Baker and Dawn Watkins are the sponsors of this club.
