2005-2006
A
group of students from Meek High School made a
trip to Montgomery, Alabama on May 2nd to attend a
performance of To Kill a Mockingbird at the
Alabama Shakespeare Festival. While in Montgomery,
they also visited the Alabama State Capitol, the
Alabama State Archives, and the First White House
of the Confederacy. The students are shown on the
front steps of the Capitol. The trip to the
Alabama Shakespeare Festival has become an annual
event for Meek High students. The faculty and
administration encourage as many students as
possible to take advantage of this wonderful
opportunity to see a world-class performance and
learn more about the state of Alabama.

The Meek High
School Students of the Month for March are Josh
Thompson and Chase Cliatt. Presenting plaques to
Josh and Chase is Alan Owens of Traders and
Farmers Bank in Arley. Meek High School wishes to
thank Traders and Farmers Bank for sponsoring this
program.

Blayne Sinyard and Tiffany Marchman. Presenting

Phalicia Moore, a
junior at Meek High School, recently shadowed
Cynda Fickert, a former Alabama Teacher of the
Year and math teacher at Drake Middle School in
Auburn, Alabama. Phalicia was one of 24 state
winners of the Parisian/Portico Essay Contest.
Each winner received a $1,000 scholarship and the
opportunity to job shadow someone in his or her
intended career field. Miss Moore also met Dr. Joe
Morton, Alabama State Superintendent of Education,
while in Auburn. Dr. Morton and a delegation from
the Alabama State Department of Education and
Auburn City Schools were visiting and observing
programs at the school. Shown in the picture are
Ms. Fickert; Marla Murrah, Phalicia's teacher,
Miss Moore, and Dr. Morton.
Congratulations to Kella Jackson, Tiffany Marchman, Jonathon Farley, Paige Watkins, and Alisha Barber for making All-State Honor Band! Kella made White Band, Tiffany made Red Band, Jonathon and Paige made Junior High Band, and Alisha made Alternate.
Congratulations to all District III Honor Band participants! Included in District III Honor Band are all All-State participants as well as the following students: Josh Price, Wade Smith, Zach Cleghorn, and Justin Harbison.
Terrance C., a junior at Meek High School, placed 2nd in the People Against a Littered State (PALS) Essay Contest. The contest is held every spring and is statewide. Terrance recently attended a luncheon in Montgomery along with other essay and poster contest winners. He is pictured with the bell on display at the Alabama State Capitol. Congratulations Terrance!

being one of two students selected on the Cullman
Electric Youth Tour to attend an all expenses paid
trip to Washington, D.C. this summer.

Basketball Teams for winning the Winston
County Tournament!

to Michael Wadsworth and Katie Bryant for
placing 1st and 2nd in the junior high spelling
bee! Michael will compete in the Winston
County Spelling Bee held in the Meek Elementary
School library on Friday, February 10th.
Congratulations
to Lance Mailloux of Meek High School for
being accepted to the University of Alabama at
Birmingham Nursing Scholars Program. Ten incoming
freshman are accepted to this prestigious program
each year and are guaranteed acceptance to the UAB
School of Nursing. Lance has also been awarded a
four year Green and Gold scholarship to UAB worth
$14,000. Lance was also accepted into the UAB
Honor's Program. The UAB scholarships totaled
$22,000.

to Josh Tolbert for being selected as a
semi-finalist in the Coca-Cola Scholars Program.
Coca-Cola Scholarships are awarded based on
character, personal merit and commitment. Merit is
demonstrated through leadership in school, civic
and extracurricular activities, academic
achievement, and motivation to serve and succeed.
Congratulations
to Chase C. and Phalicia M. for winning the
Parisian Operation Career essay contest! The
contest was sponsored by Parisian, Portico
magazine, and the Birmingham News. Chase and
Phalicia are two of 24 students chosen statewide
to participate in the program which involves
shadowing a mentor in each student's desired
career field. Phalicia will be shadowing the
2004-2005 Alabama Teacher of the Year, Cynda
Fickert, and Chase will be shadowing Robert
Ingram, a professional pilot. Chase and Phalicia
will meet their mentors at a luncheon at the
Parisian corporate offices on Wednesday, December
7th. They and their mentors will set a date for
their mentoring experience, and the students will
write follow-up essays for publication in Portico
magazine. Additionally, Chase and Phalicia each
won a $1,000 scholarship to the college of their
choice. Chase is a senior and Phalicia is a junior
at Meek High School. Again, congratulations Chase
and Phalicia!
Congratulations to Danny
Stallings for being elected to the Council for
Leaders in Alabama Schools (CLAS) 2005-2006 Board
of Directors. Mr. Stallings is serving on the
Alabama Association of Secondary School
Principals.
The Meek High
School chapter of the National Honor Society
raised over $1,200 through a combined penny drive
from Meek High and Meek Elementary to donate to
victims of Hurricane Katrina tragedy.
The winners of the elementary division were 1st
Place-Mrs. Kimbrell's class and 2nd Place-Mrs.
Gunter's class. The winners of the high school
division were 1st Place-12B-Mrs. Frith's homeroom
and 2nd Place-8B-Mrs. Ergle's homeroom.
A check will be presented to the Salvation Army in
the near future.

to Terry Youngblood at Meek High School for
receiving a $1,000 grant from Channel 42 news! Mr.
Youngblood will be able to use the money for
classroom supplies.
Meek High
School's Students of the Month
for August are Bradly M and Holly A. They received
a plaque in honor of their achievement.

to Chase Cliatt and Holly Andrews for being
selected as the Wendy's High School Heisman
nominees at Meek High School.
Congratulations to Holly Andrews for being
selected as Winston County's Junior Miss for 2006.
She will represent our county in the state
program in January.
Meek sophomore
basketball player Ashton Carter has been selected
to take part in the U.S. Junior National
Invitational Sports Festival set for
July 25-31 in Columbus, Ohio. Ashton is one
of ten players selected to represent the
state of Alabama. She was chosen from sixty
players after taking part in the All-State
Junior Nationals tournament held in Hoover on
March 13.
Congratulations
to Courtney Bell, an 8th grader at Meek High
School.
Courtney competed in the Alabama State Gymnastics
Meet on March 11 where she won the state
championship in her age group. She earned the
right to compete in the Regional Meet at
Vanderbilt University in Nashville in mid-April
where it is possible that she could qualify for
the Eastern National Competition. Courtney is the
daughter of Steve and Linda Bell. Good Luck,
Courtney!
A Senior high
team of 5 students and a Junior High team of 10
students recently competed at the Regional Science
Olympiad at the University of Alabama in
Tuscaloosa on Feb 19th.
On the Junior High Team, Adam O'Gwin (9th grade)
and Justin Harbison (7th grade) won 3rd place
bronze medals in the Bridge Building competition.
