DIBELS Information
Kindergarten children are given 4 subtests. Each subtest has
a different benchmark number. Please keep in mind that
DIBELS stands for Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy
Skills. Benchmark is the minimum score they must attain to
be on grade level. Every child should be scoring well above
the minimum score.
Initial Sound Fluency: For this test the students are timed
on how long it takes them to identify the picture that
begins with a specific sound. The benchmark is 25 in winter.
This test will not be given again in the spring.
Letter Naming Fluency: Students are given a page of random
letters. They have one minute to name as many letters as
they can. The benchmark for winter is 27. The benchmark in
the spring is 40.
Phoneme Segmentation Fluency: The test administrator reads a
word aloud to the student. For example “Tell me the sounds
you hear in box.” The student responds “/b/-/o/-/x/”. The
administrator continues giving the student words for one
minute. The student is scored on the number of correct
sounds. The benchmark for winter is 18. The benchmark for
spring is 35.
Nonsense Word Fluency: The students are given a page of
nonsense words. Such as: lif, sep, hob….. The students are
given one minute to read as many words as they can. The
students are scored on how many sounds they get correct. The
benchmark for winter is 13. The benchmark for spring is 25.
